How home care works in Texas
Non-medical home care helps older adults stay safely in the home they love. A trained caregiver can help with companionship, bathing and dressing, meals, medication reminders, light housekeeping, errands and rides to appointments, from a few hours a week to 24-hour care.
Texas home care agencies must hold a Home and Community Support Services Agency (HCSSA) license from Texas Health and Human Services (HHSC). You can look up any agency's license on the HHSC website.
Across our Texas service areas, non-medical home care typically costs roughly $28 to $36 per hour, depending on the number of hours and the level of care. Most families pay privately, and long-term care insurance and the VA Aid and Attendance benefit can help. Medicare does not cover ongoing non-medical home care.
The Alamo Area Council of Governments (AACOG) runs the local Area Agency on Aging programs for Bexar and the surrounding counties, a good free resource for caregiver support and benefits counseling.
How Home Care Helper matching works
Tell us the ZIP code where care is needed and answer a few quick questions about your loved one. We share your request with one licensed local agency that serves your area, and they reach out to talk through your needs and set up an in-home assessment. You won't get a flood of calls from a list of companies.
