How home care works in Arizona

Non-medical home care helps older adults stay safely in the home they love. A trained caregiver can help with companionship, bathing and dressing, meals, medication reminders, light housekeeping, errands and rides to appointments, from a few hours a week to 24-hour care.

Arizona does not have a separate state license category for non-medical home care agencies (the Arizona Department of Health Services licenses home health agencies, which provide skilled medical care). That makes it especially important to ask any agency how it screens and background-checks caregivers, what training they receive, and whether the agency is insured and bonded.

Across our Arizona service areas, non-medical home care typically costs roughly $32 to $40 per hour, depending on the number of hours and the level of care. Most families pay privately, and long-term care insurance and the VA Aid and Attendance benefit can help. Medicare does not cover ongoing non-medical home care.

Area Agency on Aging, Region One serves Maricopa County, and its free 24-Hour Senior HELP LINE (602-264-4357) helps families find caregiver support, benefits counseling and local services.

How Home Care Helper matching works

Tell us the ZIP code where care is needed and answer a few quick questions about your loved one. We share your request with one local agency that serves your area, and they reach out to talk through your needs and set up an in-home assessment. You won't get a flood of calls from a list of companies.
