How home care works in Minnesota

Non-medical home care helps older adults stay safely in the home they love. A trained caregiver can help with companionship, bathing and dressing, meals, medication reminders, light housekeeping, errands and rides to appointments, from a few hours a week to 24-hour care.

Minnesota home care providers must be licensed by the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH), either with a basic license (non-medical help) or a comprehensive license (which adds nursing-level services). You can verify a license on the MDH website.

Across our Minnesota service areas, non-medical home care typically costs roughly $36 to $46 per hour, depending on the number of hours and the level of care. Most families pay privately, and long-term care insurance and the VA Aid and Attendance benefit can help. Medicare does not cover ongoing non-medical home care.

Trellis is the Area Agency on Aging for the Twin Cities metro, and the free Senior LinkAge Line (1-800-333-2433) helps families compare options and benefits.

How Home Care Helper matching works

Tell us the ZIP code where care is needed and answer a few quick questions about your loved one. We share your request with one licensed local agency that serves your area, and they reach out to talk through your needs and set up an in-home assessment. You won't get a flood of calls from a list of companies.
